Our next city to discover is Siena!

Siena is famous for central huge square, called Il Campo, winding medieval alleyways, and historic horse race (called  the Palio) that takes place twice a year during the summer months.

It’s the special edition (two traditional races, held in July and August). This Palio is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Everybody can visit the race for free!!

What’s happening: ten horses and riders. Bareback!!!! dressed in the appropriate color – which represent ten of the seventeen districts. 3 laps around the square to go, but so special start 🙂 All horses are 100% wild and never rode with jockey. In order race to start they need to stay in defined order and that’s the biggest challenge. Most horses would not like to do what jockey says. You need to see it! It was amazing experience! We spent about an hour for race to start.

Funny fact, it is a horse who participate in the race, not a jockey. A lone horse, Remorex, crossed the finish line first at this special October edition! After his jockey, Andrea Coghe, fell off 😉 All the awards goes to the horse. Rider in this race is just a tool :))

It was a parade and flag exhibition as a bonus to the race!
