Sad, there were  hundreds of them just 5 years ago. Only few remain working. They were still used to irrigate the plateau that days.

We reached our destination – we want to visit a Zeus cave.  Leave our car on a parking place – 2,5 euro. There are small taverns + gift shops nearby.

Prepare water and good footwear. It’s a 800m walk to the cave entrance up the mountain! Under the straight sun! with almost no shade.

The climb is steep at the begging, then more zig – zags appear:) and slippery rocks are at  the end!

One more beautiful viewpoint to the whole port and bay and the statue “Horn of Amalthea”. According to mythological data, it’s the horn of goat,  which nurtured Zeus herself. The story is that as Zeus was playing with Amalthea he broke one of her horns.

Not so far you can find one more statue “Europa”.

According to mythological data she was the mother of King Minos of Crete!

Here is the love story: while Europa was gathering flowers she saw a bull. She caressed his flanks, and eventually got onto his back. Zeus, who was the bull. He took that opportunity and ran to the sea and swam with her on his back to the island of Crete. Than he revealed his true identity and Europa became the first queen of Crete.
