New days and new emotions!
Lassithi plateu is located in the eastern region of Crete (Lassithi prefecture).
It will take us 2 hours to get there by car.
There is something magical in this place what makes us come here again and again (it’s already ours 3rd visit)
Scenic and breathtaking panoramas are one of the reasons 🙂
Second reason-white windmills.
Lassithi plateau is a farming area, but farmers started to use new technologies nowadays and windmills became a history + tourist attractions 😦
Let’s have a quick tour in Homo sapiens museum. 3 euro per ticket
Showing you the existing time of Homo sapiens till nowadays
you will fill like your are participating in a journey through evolution
The exhibition is small and basic, but you can touch the exhibits:) I think it’s really good place for families with children.
A bit about Russian astronauts 🙂
Take amazing photo shots from a balcony with magnificent view. Here is a cafe to rest!
Go to the shop for souvenirs 🙂
Remember that you are always welcome in this place 🙂
Welcome to Crete (sign written in Russian 🙂 on the photo below 🙂
Andrew, let’s go there ?:))
Driving around the plateau – some white windmills still here but the amount decreased drastically in less than 5 years ((
Sad, there were hundreds of them just 5 years ago. Only few remain working. They were still used to irrigate the plateau that days.
You can find here some local touristic shops with handmade gifts.
We reached our destination – we want to visit a Zeus cave. Leave our car on a parking place – 2,5 euro. There are small taverns + gift shops nearby.
Prepare water and good footwear. It’s a 800m walk to the cave entrance up the mountain! Under the straight sun! with almost no shade.
The climb is steep at the begging, then more zig – zags appear:) and slippery rocks are at the end!
But you can cheat !!! You can hire a donkey to bring you up to the hill 🙂 It will cost you 10 euro 😉
At the top you can see whole plateau and it’s really beautiful place to enjoy nature!
But what about the Psychro/ Diktean / Zeus cave!? It’s more than a simple cave:)
Legend says that it was a place where the goddess Rhea gave birth to Zeus.
6 euro per ticket. The entrance of the cave is 1025 meters above sea level. More than 200 steps down, moreover the temperature descend from 40 to 18 Celsius!!!
It impress with countless stalactites and stalagmites!
Look! They are amazing!
Before you leave this place, take your time and enjoy different types of freshly squeezed juices in small cafes near the parking slot! It was so refreshing and delicious after ours physical efforts!
One more time – be carefull on the roads! These small creatures 🙂 are everywhere) on the roads…
… and near the road :)) So ride slowly if you see them 🙂 You never know whats on their mind:))
Our next stop is a beautiful harbor town – Agios Nikolaos.
We are hungry a bit, but here it’s really easy to find a place to stop, because here are many taverns and restaurants serving good local cuisine with an amazing views 🙂
Check this out 🙂
What to do after great dinner? Somebody will say it’s not healthy 🙂 but!
While Andrew is enjoying the sea life, I’m enjoying my Coca Cola on sandy public beach by the marina(called Ammos). It’s clean and has perfect location – city center!! + if you want you can hire sunbed or umbrella and free fresh water shower available.
Take a walk around marina to see if by chance someone has arrived in a dazzling yacht:)
or just meditate in a small park:)
Enough with meditation:) Let’s walk to feel sea breeze and salt crystals on our tongues 🙂
One more beautiful viewpoint to the whole port and bay and the statue “Horn of Amalthea”. According to mythological data, it’s the horn of goat, which nurtured Zeus herself. The story is that as Zeus was playing with Amalthea he broke one of her horns.
Not so far you can find one more statue “Europa”.
According to mythological data she was the mother of King Minos of Crete!
Here is the love story: while Europa was gathering flowers she saw a bull. She caressed his flanks, and eventually got onto his back. Zeus, who was the bull. He took that opportunity and ran to the sea and swam with her on his back to the island of Crete. Than he revealed his true identity and Europa became the first queen of Crete.
Getting deeper in the town 🙂
A lot of small shops on the streets(ordinary ones + touristic ones)
Always ability fresh fruits ..
and even in small supermarkets you can cut with a knife banana for yourself 🙂
A great city to visit but it’s time to go back to the hotel 🙂
+1 more Cretan sunset in our life 🙂
Tomorrow will be new day, new emotions:)
See you tomorrow 🙂
