Day 5. Kournas Lake. St. Nicolas chapel in Georgioupoli. Seitan Limania beach. Fortress of Rethymno.

I saw an arch in the see – one more nature’s wonder 🙂  on our way home yesterday, it’s not so far from our hotel, so we decided to go to this place, to look at this wonder .

Here is a small and cozy beach with 1 tiny shop – boat 🙂

Еhat small arch on the right! hmm it’s quiet far away, even in reality. You can’t go closer, but probably it could be reached by boat! We’ll do it later! Will take a boat trip to get closer.DSC_1616

We are going to Chania prefecture today!

We reached our destination spot in 40 minutes 🙂

It’s lake Kournas, the only freshwater lake in Crete, lying in a valley surrounded with gorgeous mountains.

We’ve heard that there are a lot of turtles here:)

There are free car parking areas near the lake.

We rent pedalo on the lake and took a voyage around the lake.

Small pedalo  cost 7 euro/hour, a bit bigger one – we took like this one ( you have a lot of space for your stuff (for 3-4 person) – 12 euros.

So we are ready to chase turtles!

There is no turtles in the middle of the lake!

You have to pedal over to the opposite side of the lake to see turtles!.

Water is so clear, just be patient! +  you can throw some bread in the water, to attract turtles :)(take some bread/chips with you if you are chasing them :))

We are lucky! We saw turtles, crabs, different kinds of birds…

We spent 1,5 hour on the water and we are waiting for our meal 🙂

There are lot taverns near the lake and sometime you’ll have company ) legendary Greek cats 🙂

Don’t miss to buy a souvenirs from the pottery workshops, they sell their own handicrafts as well as other touristic stuff 🙂

We are in a small town Georgioupoli, it was on our way and I knew that there is a small beautiful chapel, so we decided to visit it.

Appropriate shoes recommended 😉 narrow boulder path + mind for crabs!!! there will be a lot of small ones on your way 🙂

A small charming white chapel in the middle of the sea.

Quiet place, sound of waves.. take your time!

and we are almost reached Seitan Limania Beach!

Probably it was the curviest road we’ve ever done!

It starts here – near the small chapel. The last chance to make a U-turn:)

There are a steep path to the beach, may be hard for small kids (take the south path). The beach is lovely, but pretty small and busy in a peak season:)

It was so green , so we thought that it’s a park on our way – so we decided to go closer.

We were surprised, it’s not a a park, it’s a Suda bay war cemetery! It was founded in 1941 Suda bay.

We keep going and exploring new places and our next stop is Venetian castle – Fortezza of  Rethymno

The construction of the castle started in 1571. Entrance fee is 4 euro.

Is a unique monument on the hill of Palaiokastro in the heart of the city.

Today fortress hosts art exhibition. As well there are summer events ongoing nowadays.
