Morning sunny Corfu, we are ready to explore yours capital today!
Some stops on our way, to enjoy the beauty of the island. By the way, like in all other Greek places I cannot skip mythology 🙂 Corfu is the place where Poseidon enjoyed marital bliss with the nymph Korkyra, so Corfu was allegedly named after this mythical beauty!
We reached city of Corfu, parked our car, so we’ll enjoy sightseeing on foot! Let’s start! Corfu old town is a junction of small alleys between Venetian and Neoclassic houses.
Here you can find two fortresses – the New and the Old one, so if you have enough time to spent here, I advice you to see both of them!
We started with the New one. The New Fortress was built in the 16th century, very imposing construction!
Recently fortress was renovated and nowadays it hosts facilities of Greek Navy and some cultural events 🙂
Look at this coastline! Wow! Great view of the town of Corfu and the Ionian sea between the island and mainland! It’s really ideal place for the fortress 🙂
We are heading the Old Fortress and on our way is Spinada. It’s one of the most attractive and impressive square in a town (located between two fortresses). It’s huge green area with a lot of shades and benches to escape the summer heat, by the way it’s also very popular by the locals.
Few steps to climb, high up on the hill and we are ready to explore the Old Fortress!
It’s a historical landmark and very picturesque.
One interesting fact about it, that the fortress was the location of a scene from the James Bond film For Your Eyes only :)(1981 year 🙂 )
Visit it, unforgettable experience and stunning views!
Impressive massive bastions and you will get amazing vistas of the city and sea!
Our rest of the day we spent in the old city, here you’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafes, shops, museums… with warm welcoming and huge smile:)
Corfu Town is a place you’ll want to spend some time exploring! Visit it!
